or spinal cord are diagnosed each year in the United States; and

5

WHEREAS, About 20% of those people will be diagnosed with a

6

primary brain tumor, while the majority will be found to have

7

metastatic brain tumors; and

8

WHEREAS, Primary tumors are tumors that begin in the brain

the brain are lung and breast cancer; and

that they are most common among children from 3 to 12 years of

1

age and adults from 40 to 70 years of age; and

2

WHEREAS, Studies indicate that some types of brain tumors are

tumors; and

7

WHEREAS, Scientists do not believe that head injuries cause

brain tumors to develop; and

9

WHEREAS, Improvements in childhood cancer survival rates have

10

been made as a result of clinical trials, with more than one

11

half of children diagnosed with brain tumors surviving five

years from diagnosis, and, in some subgroups of patients, an

13

even higher rate of survival and cure is possible; and

14

WHEREAS, Despite the efforts of some of the world's finest

15

researchers to develop better therapies, individuals who are

16

diagnosed with brain tumors still do not have adequate treatment

17

choices, and, in fact, the outlook for brain tumor patients has

18

not improved significantly in the last 20 years; and
