| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the 17th District Imperial Dance Squad for its |
2 | dedication and service to the community of South Philadelphia |
3 | and work with the Philadelphia Police Department. |
4 | WHEREAS, Police have stated that, over the years, the |
5 | relationship they once had with the public has deteriorated, and |
6 | the trust that police rely on to do an effective job has been |
7 | hindered because of the "No Snitching" belief that young men and |
8 | women now embrace; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Two Philadelphia police officers, Sharon Bailey and |
10 | Frank Holmes, envisioned police and young adults interacting in |
11 | a positive manner while building solid relationships; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The officers wanted to make a difference and founded |
13 | a dance squad called the 17th District Imperial Dance Squad, |
14 | holding the first audition April 12, 2008, at Wharton Square in |
15 | Philadelphia; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Nineteen young women and two males were selected for |
2 | the dance squad; and |
3 | WHEREAS, During the summer of 2008, the squad danced numerous |
4 | times throughout the South Philadelphia area at gospel events, |
5 | carnivals and fundraisers; and |
6 | WHEREAS, The squad's most notable civic event occurred when |
7 | the squad danced center court at a Philadelphia 76ers game to |
8 | raise money for the Philadelphia Police Department's Fallen |
9 | Officer Fund, successfully raising $1,112; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The year 2009 marks the second anniversary for the |
11 | squad; therefore be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the 17th |
13 | District Imperial Dance Squad, its founding police officers and |
14 | current team members, Nashaye Overby, Nashiairah Saunder, Ciara |
15 | Gardner, Shaderia Moore, Tamia Gardner, Shakoyah Cotlett, Alexis |
16 | Woods, Tyshae Peterson, Neshjayah Boles and Derosha Boles, for |
17 | their hard work and dedication to the community of South |
18 | Philadelphia and their efforts to strengthen the bonds of trust |
19 | between the Philadelphia Police Department and South |
20 | Philadelphia residents; and be it further |
21 | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to |
22 | the 17th District Imperial Dance Squad and its founders as a |
23 | token of the Commonwealth's appreciation for their service to |
24 | the City of Philadelphia and this Commonwealth. |
