| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing and honoring the 100th anniversary of Saint |
2 | Cecilia's Parish in the Fox Chase section of Philadelphia. |
3 | WHEREAS, On October 1, 1911, Archbishop Prendergast |
4 | officially established Saint Cecilia's as a parish and appointed |
5 | the Reverend William C. Sheridan to serve as the founding |
6 | pastor; and |
7 | WHEREAS, As an act of benevolence, James McMenamin, a |
8 | faithful parishioner, offered the pastor use of his home which |
9 | served as the parish rectory until 1914 and was often the site |
10 | of daily Mass; and |
11 | WHEREAS, On October 7, 1911, the first recorded baptism, that |
12 | of Gertrude and Isabelle Shire, took place in Saint Cecilia's |
13 | Parish; and |
14 | WHEREAS, In 1911, Saint Cecilia's Parish purchased property |

1 | that ran from Rhawn Street to Stanwood Street from Patrick |
2 | McGinn for $500; and |
3 | WHEREAS, On June 30, 1912, 5,000 of the local Catholic |
4 | faithful participated in a procession in an effort to |
5 | appropriately mark the laying of the cornerstone for the |
6 | basement of the church by Archbishop Prendergast; and |
7 | WHEREAS, On October 6, 1912, the first Solemn Mass was sung |
8 | in the new church; and |
9 | WHEREAS, On October 9, 1912, Joseph Nees and Mabel Grookett |
10 | were the first parishioners united in holy matrimony in the new |
11 | church; and |
12 | WHEREAS, In May 1913, the initial Holy Communion class was |
13 | received; and |
14 | WHEREAS, On April 16, 1914, the first confirmation was |
15 | administered by Bishop John J. McCort; and |
16 | WHEREAS, On June 23, 1919, the Reverend John F. Burke was |
17 | appointed as the second pastor of Saint Cecilia's Parish after |
18 | the passing of Father William C. Sheridan on June 16, 1919; and |
19 | WHEREAS, On August 17, 1924, the cornerstone was laid for the |
20 | Saint Cecilia's Parish School at 530 Stanwood Street, which |
21 | commenced its first class in September 1925; and |
22 | WHEREAS, In June 1926, under the instruction of Mother |
23 | Marianna, the school's first principal, the school graduated its |
24 | first class of students; and |
25 | WHEREAS, In September 1927, the school added a two-year |
26 | Commercial High School which required a nominal tuition from |
27 | both parishioners and nonparishioners in order to meet expenses; |
28 | and |
29 | WHEREAS, During the many funding shortfalls which |
30 | characterized the Great Depression, Saint Cecilia's Parish was |

1 | the benefactor of many acts of generosity, including those of |
2 | its first custodian, Larry Wendell; and |
3 | WHEREAS, As a result of this community-wide culture of |
4 | selflessness and piety, Saint Cecilia's Parish has managed to |
5 | overcome many obstacles and setbacks and today finds itself a |
6 | well-respected and revered house of worship; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Saint Cecilia's Parish School has skillfully |
8 | instructed and graduated several future priests and successful |
9 | alumni, including former NFL star and the 2002 Most Valuable |
10 | Player of the National Football League, Rich Gannon; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Saint Cecilia's Parish rich and longstanding |
12 | traditions of faith, charity and community have been the |
13 | foundation for its 100 years of success; therefore be it |
14 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and |
15 | honor the 100th anniversary of Saint Cecilia's Parish as both a |
16 | Faith Community and as an asset to the Greater Philadelphia |
17 | area. |
