A RESOLUTION

  

1

Designating the month of September 2009 as "Prostate Cancer

2

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society reports that prostate

4

cancer is the most common type of cancer, other than skin

5

cancer, diagnosed among men in the nation and estimates that

6

192,280 new cases will occur in 2009, 8,130 of which will be in

7

this Commonwealth; and

8

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society reports that prostate

9

cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men in

the nation and will cause an estimated 27,360 deaths in 2009,

2

1,440 of which will be in this Commonwealth; and

3

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society reports that this

4

Commonwealth is among the top five states with new cases in

5

2009; and

6

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that men have

7

a 1 in 6 chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer in their

8

lifetime; and

9

WHEREAS, The risk of developing prostate cancer rises sharply

10

after age 50 and doubles every ten years thereafter; and

11

WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is twice as common among African-

12

American men; and

13

WHEREAS, Early detection and screening for prostate cancer

14

are vital to combating the disease, especially for men more than

15

50 years of age, African-American men and men with a family

16

history of prostate cancer; and

17

WHEREAS, With early detection, the five-year relative

18

survival rate for men with localized prostate cancer is 100%;

19

and

20

WHEREAS, Greater public awareness and education about

21

prostate cancer is necessary to help protect the health and

22

welfare of men; therefore be it

23

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

24

month of September 2009 as "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month" in

25

Pennsylvania and encourage all men to educate themselves about

26

the risk of prostate cancer.
