A RESOLUTION

Declaring the week of May 3 through 7, 2010, as "Pennsylvania

2

Academic Competition Week" in Pennsylvania; and urging the

3

Department of Education, local school districts and

4

intermediate units to participate in the 19th annual

5

Statewide Pennsylvania Academic Competition on May 7, 2010.

WHEREAS, The education of all Pennsylvania children is a

7

major concern to the citizens of this Commonwealth and requires

8

the use of creative and innovative means to focus attention upon

9

this concern; and

10

WHEREAS, Excellence displayed in athletic competition has

11

long been recognized by societal and community rewards provided

12

for that competition; and

13

WHEREAS, Academic competition is an innovative and creative

14

attempt to involve children, parents, educators and community

15

members in an educational forum for excellence; and

WHEREAS, Academic competition helps to hone the abilities and

2

intellectual skills of students, as well as providing

3

opportunities for incentives to continue the pursuit of

4

excellence in education; and

5

WHEREAS, A coordinated program of academic competition has

6

not existed in this Commonwealth, except in isolated school

7

district programs; therefore be it

8

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare the week

9

of May 3 through 7, 2010, as "Pennsylvania Academic Competition

10

Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it further

11

RESOLVED, That the Department of Education, local school

12

districts and intermediate units be urged to actively

13

participate in the finals of the 19th annual Statewide

14

Pennsylvania Academic Competition to be held in the House of

15

Representatives Chamber on May 7, 2010.
