A RESOLUTION
1Designating March 2, 2013, as "Read Across America Day" in
2Pennsylvania.
3WHEREAS, The citizens of this Commonwealth stand firmly
4committed to promoting reading as the catalyst for our students'
5future academic success, their preparation for America's jobs of
6the future and their ability to compete in a global economy; and
7WHEREAS, Community involvement in public education and
8reading activities is an important way to foster educational
9growth among children; and
10WHEREAS, The National Education Association's "Read Across
11America Day" began in 1998 as the largest celebration of reading
12ever held up to that point in our nation's history; and
13WHEREAS, The National Education Association's "Read Across
14America Day" continues to be the nation's largest reading event,
1with millions of readers participating in a variety of reading
2activities; and
3WHEREAS, The works of Dr. Seuss, the pen name of Theodor
4Seuss Geisel, continue to inspire many people of all ages to
5love reading; and
6WHEREAS, The National Education Association's "Read Across
7America" program is held annually on Dr. Seuss' birthday to
8promote reading and adult involvement in the education of our
9children; therefore be it
10RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, in support of
11the National Education Association's "Read Across America"
12program, designate March 2, 2013, as "Read Across America Day"
13in Pennsylvania and call on the citizens of this Commonwealth to
14make an extra effort to encourage reading among children in
15celebration of reading and Dr. Seuss.
