A RESOLUTION

  

1

Commemorating the 31st anniversary of the National Veterans

2

Wheelchair Games, which will be held in the City of

3

Pittsburgh from August 1 through 6, 2011.

4

WHEREAS, The National Veterans Wheelchair Games is a multi-

5

event sports and rehabilitation program for military service

6

veterans who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to

7

spinal cord injuries, amputations or certain neurological

8

problems; and

9

WHEREAS, The National Veterans Wheelchair Games are an

10

outgrowth of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs'

11

historic involvement in wheelchair sports; and

12

WHEREAS, The first National Veterans Wheelchair Games were

13

held in 1981, the "International Year of Disabled Persons," at

14

the VA Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia; and

15

WHEREAS, The National Veterans Wheelchair Games, which now

16

attract more than 500 athletes each year, is the largest annual

17

wheelchair sports event in the world; and

WHEREAS, Any honorably discharged veteran who uses a

2

wheelchair to compete in sports and is eligible for health care

3

in the VA system can register to compete in the games; and

4

WHEREAS, Competitive events at the National Veterans

5

Wheelchair Games include air guns, archery, basketball, bowling,

6

field events, handcycling, a motorized wheelchair rally, nine-

7

ball, power soccer, quad rugby, slalom, softball, swimming,

8

table tennis, track, trapshooting and weightlifting; and

9

WHEREAS, Athletes compete in all events against others of

10

similar athletic ability, competitive experience or age; and

11

WHEREAS, The National Veterans Wheelchair Games provide

12

opportunities for newly disabled veterans to gain sports skills

13

and be exposed to other wheelchair athletes and provide a strong

14

sense of common identity and camaraderie among the participants;

15

and

16

WHEREAS, The presenters of this event, the Department of

17

Veterans Affairs and the Paralyzed Veterans of America, are

18

committed to improving the quality of life for veterans with

19

disabilities and fostering better health through sports

20

competition; and

21

WHEREAS, The National Veterans Wheelchair Games are hosted by

22

a VA medical facility and a Paralyzed Veterans of America

23

chapter; and

24

WHEREAS, The games would not be possible without corporate

25

and private sponsors as well as the thousands of volunteers that

26

help annually; and

27

WHEREAS, Events will take place at the David L. Lawrence

28

Convention Center, University of Pittsburgh's Trees Hall,

29

Princess Lanes Bowling Center and other area venues in and

30

around the City of Pittsburgh; and

WHEREAS, The National Veterans Wheelchair Games are free of

2

charge and the public is welcome to attend; and

3

WHEREAS, This year's event is being hosted by the Veterans

4

Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System and the Keystone Chapter of

5

the Paralyzed Veterans of America; therefore be it

6

RESOLVED, That the Senate commemorate the 31st anniversary of

7

the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, which will be held in

8

the City of Pittsburgh from August 1 through 6, 2011.
