A RESOLUTION

1

Honoring again the national heroes aboard United Airlines flight

2

93 on September 11, 2009, and commending all of the

3

volunteers and contributors who came together to make the

4

Hearts of Steel project a reality.

5

WHEREAS, On September 11, 2001, this country was subject to

6

terrorist attacks resulting in the senseless deaths of thousands

7

of innocent victims; and

8

WHEREAS, The passengers and crew of United Airlines flight 93

9

who gave their lives on September 11, 2001, over the rolling

10

fields of Shanksville are heroes of the highest magnitude who

11

fought and won the first battle in the war on terrorism; and

12

WHEREAS, The words of Abraham Lincoln spoken at the

13

battlefield at Gettysburg, "The world will little note, nor long

14

remember, what we say here, but can never forget what they did

15

here," ring true in characterizing the courageous passengers and

16

crew of United Airlines flight 93; and

17

WHEREAS, The Hearts of Steel project was conceived and

18

implemented to honor the passengers and crew of Flight 93 by

19

1

total proceeds going to the construction and erection of a

2

permanent memorial at the crash site in Shanksville, Somerset

3

County; and

4

WHEREAS, Hundreds of sponsors, volunteers and organizations

5

came together to make the Hearts of Steel project a reality

6

through their generous donations of time, labor, materials and

7

funding; and

8

WHEREAS, The original goal was to raise approximately $10,000

9

for the memorial but orders that came in from Pennsylvania, the

10

United States and from overseas were so overwhelming that more

11

than $1,000,000 was raised for the memorial; and

12

WHEREAS, The bracelets are made of solid stainless steel,

13

which, like the American spirit, is lustrous and will neither

14

tarnish nor break; and

15

WHEREAS, The bracelets are reminders of how the courageous

16

actions of a few brave people can change the world; and

17

WHEREAS, The outpouring of volunteer efforts and

18

contributions to the Hearts of Steel project greatly exceeded

19

all expectations; and

20

WHEREAS, The Hearts of Steel project represents both a

21

fitting commemoration of the heroes of Flight 93 and a triumph

22

of the human spirit; and

23

WHEREAS, The memorial is set to undergo physical construction

24

in the near future, with a scheduled completion date before the

25

tenth anniversary of that unforgettable day; therefore be it

26

RESOLVED, That the Senate again honor the national heroes

27

aboard United Airlines flight 93; and be it further

28

RESOLVED, That the Senate commend all volunteers and
