| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the 40th anniversary season of the Pittsburgh Ballet |
2 | Theatre. |
3 | WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre was founded in 1969, |
4 | through the efforts of the company's first artistic director, |
5 | Nicholas Petrov and benefactor, Loti Falk Gaffney; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has been host to some of |
7 | the most talented artists of the day, including Frederick |
8 | Franklin, Violette Verdy and Edward Villela; and |
9 | WHEREAS, In 1982, Patricia Wilde, a former prima ballerina |
10 | with New York City Ballet, took the reins as artistic director, |
11 | bringing with her the strength, speed and sharpness of the |
12 | Balanchine repertoire and moving the company into the national |
13 | and international spotlight; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has had a rich history |
15 | that has been punctuated with some of the brightest luminaries |
16 | of the dance world; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Terrence S. Orr became Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's |
18 | artistic director in 1997, and began working on the company's |

1 | full-length repertoire beginning with Don Quixote; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Orr has since introduced more contemporary works and |
3 | commissioned world premieres from today's brightest and most |
4 | sought-after choreographers; and |
5 | WHEREAS, One of Mr. Orr's most exciting achievements has been |
6 | choreographing a new production of the Nutcracker for the city |
7 | of Pittsburgh that debuted in 2002; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre currently has a company of |
9 | 30 professionals who represent some of the most gifted and |
10 | talented dancers in the world; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School trains the next |
12 | generation of dancers and currently boasts an enrollment of more |
13 | than 800 students; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is a part of Pittsburgh's |
15 | cultural landscape entertaining more than 70,000 people each |
16 | year; therefore be it |
17 | RESOLVED, That the Senate honor Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre on |
18 | its 40th anniversary season; and be it further |
19 | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to |
20 | Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, 2900 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA |
21 | 15201. |
