A RESOLUTION

Designating the week of September 20 through 26, 2010, as

2

"Active Aging Week" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Active Aging Week promotes the benefits of a healthy

4

lifestyle on a national scale by giving older adults the

5

opportunity to experience activities and exercise in a safe,

6

friendly and fun atmosphere; and

7

WHEREAS, Each year during the last full week of September,

8

Active Aging Week is celebrated, and this year the event occurs

9

from September 20 through September 26; and

10

WHEREAS, Active Aging Week is the annual health promotion

11

event organized by the International Council on Active Aging, an

12

association that supports professionals who develop wellness and

13

fitness facilities and services for adults 50 years of age and

14

older, and events are delivered by the International Council on

15

Active Aging's members and colleagues; and

16

WHEREAS, Host sites, including local seniors organizations,

17

retirement communities, seniors centers, health clubs, parks,

recreation centers and age-restricted apartment/condominium

2

complexes, sponsor activities at their locations, in parks and

3

malls and at community locations such as churches and social

4

clubs; and

5

WHEREAS, Free activities include group walks, group-exercise

6

classes, health lectures, health fairs, nutrition classes, art

7

and craft classes, concerts, dances, demonstrations and previews

8

of upcoming activities, such as fall management programs; and

9

WHEREAS, The benefits of the week are:

10

(1)  Free to older adults.

11

(2)  Fun and educational.

12

(3)  A single event or multiple activities during the

13

week.

14

(4)  A chance to build a sense of community and

15

camaraderie, which are keys to motivating older adults to

16

start and stay active;

17

and

18

WHEREAS, Individuals who live life as fully as possible

19

within the six dimensions of wellness, physical, spiritual,

20

cognitive/intellectual, social, emotional and

21

professional/vocational, embrace the active-aging lifestyle;

22

therefore be it

23

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of September 20

24

through 26, 2010, as "Active Aging Week" in Pennsylvania.
