relating to access to public alternative high schools and | ||
high-school-level disciplinary alternative education programs for | ||
advising concerning postsecondary educational and training | ||
opportunities. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 29, Education Code, is | ||
amended by adding Section 29.0823 to read as follows: | ||
Sec. 29.0823. ADVISING CONCERNING POSTSECONDARY | ||
EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES. A high school that | ||
provides a flexible school day program under Section 29.0822 or a | ||
similar alternative high school program shall allow access to the | ||
school by counselors and advisors representing postsecondary | ||
educational institutions to make presentations and advise the | ||
program's students concerning opportunities for college and other | ||
postsecondary education and training, student financial aid, | ||
college tours, and early college education programs. The school may | ||
adopt reasonable policies for administering this section, | ||
including policies as to the periods during the school day when | ||
access is allowed. | ||
SECTION 2. Section 37.008, Education Code, is amended by | ||
adding Subsection (n) to read as follows: | ||
(n) A disciplinary alternative education program for | ||
students at the high school level shall allow access to the program | ||
by counselors and advisors representing postsecondary educational | ||
institutions to make presentations and advise the program's | ||
students concerning opportunities for college and other | ||
postsecondary education and training, student financial aid, | ||
college tours, and early college education programs. The program | ||
may adopt reasonable policies for administering this subsection, | ||
including policies as to the periods during the program day when | ||
access is allowed. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act applies beginning with the 2013-2014 | ||
school year. | ||
SECTION 4. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2013. |
