WHEREAS, Herman A. Meyer Jr., a legendary figure in the | ||
history of the St. Mary's University men's basketball program, | ||
passed away on February 4, 2022; and | ||
WHEREAS, Born in 1940, "Buddy" Meyer enrolled at St. Mary's | ||
in 1961 and quickly gained acclaim on the basketball court; the | ||
first Rattlers player to be selected to the All-Big State | ||
Conference First Team in four different years, he was also an | ||
Honorable Mention NAIA All-American and helped lead St. Mary's to | ||
the national tournament in 1964; after graduating in 1965, he | ||
became head basketball coach at Antonian College Preparatory High | ||
School, guiding the team to the state championship in 1968; and | ||
WHEREAS, That same year, Coach Meyer returned to St. Mary's, | ||
and he served as an assistant coach for a decade before taking the | ||
reins as head basketball coach in 1978; over the course of a | ||
remarkable tenure spanning 27 seasons, he led the Rattlers to 530 | ||
wins, 17 conference titles, 13 appearances in the NAIA National | ||
Tournament, and 4 trips to the NCAA Division II South Central Region | ||
Tournament; his crowning achievement came in 1989, when St. Mary's | ||
won the NAIA national championship, and he was named National Coach | ||
of the Year; he further distinguished himself as athletics director | ||
from 1980 to 2001 and helped the school transition from the NAIA to | ||
the NCAA Division II ranks; and | ||
WHEREAS, Coach Meyer's many accolades include induction into | ||
the NAIA Hall of Fame, the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame, and the | ||
St. Mary's Athletics Hall of Fame; moreover, his No. 44 jersey was | ||
retired in 2003, and the Rattlers home court was named in honor of | ||
Coach Meyer and his wife, Anna, in 2007; and | ||
WHEREAS, Renowned for his commitment to the student-athletes | ||
he mentored, Buddy Meyer left an indelible mark on the St. Mary's | ||
basketball program, and his achievements as a player, coach, and | ||
athletics director will long endure; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Herman A. Meyer Jr. | ||
and extend deepest condolences to the members of his family: to his | ||
wife, Anna Meyer; to his siblings, Fred and Susan; to his children, | ||
Suzanne, Mary Beth, Jennifer, and Herman; to his grandchildren; and | ||
to all who mourn his passing; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Buddy | ||
Meyer. | ||
