Zora Lee Shepherd | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and | ||
commemorates the life of Zora Lee Shepherd, who died June 5, | ||
2013, at the age of 82; and | ||
WHEREAS, Zora Shepherd was born January 18, 1931, in Waco; | ||
she graduated from A. J. Moore High School and went on to earn a | ||
bachelor's degree from Paul Quinn College and a master's degree | ||
from Texas Woman's University; and | ||
WHEREAS, She married the Reverend Charlie B. Shepherd on | ||
May 18, 1957, and the couple raised five children together; she | ||
served for many years as first lady at her husband's church, | ||
Peaceful Zion Baptist Church, where she was an indispensable | ||
source of support for him and a vital part of the choir, mission, | ||
and Vacation Bible School ministries; and | ||
WHEREAS, She enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as an | ||
educator with the Grand Prairie Independent School District; a | ||
gifted and caring teacher, she instilled in her students a sense | ||
of pride and a lifelong love of learning; she was also active in | ||
numerous community and philanthropic organizations, including | ||
the Eastern Star, the National Association for the Advancement of | ||
Colored People, and the United Negro College Fund; and | ||
WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she | ||
gave unselfishly to others, and her generous spirit and her | ||
enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be | ||
forgotten; and | ||
WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, | ||
and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by | ||
her family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere | ||
condolences to the bereaved family of Zora Lee Shepherd; and, be | ||
it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
memory of Zora Lee Shepherd. | ||
