SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 461
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  George P. Kazen
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of the Honorable George P. Kazen, who died
  April 27, 2021, at the age of 81; and
         WHEREAS, George Kazen was an exemplary citizen and a highly
  regarded federal judge whose fairness, integrity, and thorough
  knowledge of the law had a profound impact on jurisprudence in
  our state and nation; and
         WHEREAS, Born on February 29, 1940, he grew up in Laredo
  and attended Saint Joseph's Academy; he went on to earn a degree
  from The University of Texas School of Law, where he was a member
  of the Law Review; and
         WHEREAS, Judge Kazen was nominated by President Jimmy
  Carter to a seat on the United States District Court in 1979, and
  he served with distinction for nearly 40 years with the Laredo
  Division of the Southern District of Texas; he served as chief
  judge for the district from 1996 to 2003, and he was appointed to
  the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court in 2003; and
         WHEREAS, He assumed senior status in 2009 but remained
  active, and he continued to handle a third of the Laredo
  Division's civil and criminal docket until his retirement in
  2018; in recognition of his years of exceptional service, the
  federal courthouse in Laredo was named in his honor; and
         WHEREAS, A devout Catholic who practiced his faith in his
  daily life, Judge Kazen was involved in supporting a number of
  charitable Catholic organizations, and he served as a member of
  the Red Mass planning committee for the Diocese of Laredo since
  its inception in 2000; and
         WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband to the late Barbara Ann
  Kazen and a loving father to his four children; he was respected
  and admired by all who were privileged to share in his life, and
  he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his
  family and his countless friends; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of George P. Kazen; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of George Kazen.
