AMENDMENT IN THE NATURE OF A SUBSTITUTE

A BILL to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered 22.1-273.5, relating to Department of Education; education materials concerning risks of opioids.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 22.1-273.5 as follows:

§22.1-273.5. Department; education materials concerning risks of opioids.

The Department, in consultation with such stakeholders and experts as it deems necessary or appropriate, shall develop and distribute to each school board age-appropriate and evidence-based education materials concerning the risks to health and safety that are posed by opioids, with a particular focus on [ prevention, identifying signs of overdose, providing resources for support, risks and effects of addiction, and ] the risk of death that is posed by fentanyl. Each school board shall ensure that such materials are distributed to [ or and ] incorporated into instructional programs for students enrolled in the local school division.
