A BILL to amend and reenact §3.4 of Chapter 952 of the Acts of Assembly of 2000, which provided a charter for the Town of Rocky Mount in Franklin County, relating to election of mayor and council members; term limits.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That §3.4 of Chapter 952 of the Acts of Assembly of 2000 is amended and reenacted as follows:

§3.4. Election and term of office.

The council shall be elected in the manner provided by Virginia elections laws. Three A mayor and three council members shall be elected on the first Tuesday in May of the year 2000 November general election date in 2022 and every four years thereafter. A mayor and three other Three council members shall be elected on the first Tuesday in May of the year 2002 November general election date in 2024 and every four years thereafter.

The term of office for the mayor and all council members shall begin on the first day of July January next following their election, and each shall serve for a term of four years or until a successor shall have been elected and qualified. The mayor and council members may succeed themselves as often as the voters may choose, except no person shall be eligible to be elected to serve more than three consecutive terms. Service for a partial term shall not preclude serving the allowed number of full terms. These limits shall apply to terms of service beginning on and after January 1, 2025.
