AMENDMENT IN THE NATURE OF A SUBSTITUTE
(Proposed by the House Committee on Education
on February 7, 2022)

A BILL to require the Board of Education to establish multiple pathways to the advanced studies diploma and associated diploma seals.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. §1. The Board of Education (the Board) shall establish a pathway to the advanced studies high school diploma, and an associated diploma seal for students who successfully follow and demonstrate excellence on such pathway, that requires advanced coursework in a career and technical education field but does not require coursework in world language. The Board shall establish an additional pathway to the advanced studies high school diploma, and an associated diploma seal for students who successfully follow and demonstrate excellence on such pathway, that requires advanced coursework in world language but does not require coursework in a career and technical education field.

§2. The pathways to the advanced studies high school diploma and the associated diploma seals established by the Board of Education pursuant to §1 of this act shall become effective for the 2023–2024 school year and shall be available to any student, regardless of the school year during which the student enters ninth grade.
