HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 127
Commending Trinity United Methodist Church.

WHEREAS, for 250 years, Trinity United Methodist Church of Alexandria has provided its members with uplifting spiritual guidance, innumerable moments of joyful fellowship and worship, and ample opportunities for generous community outreach; and

WHEREAS, on November 20, 1774, at a time when there were fewer than 20 Methodist preachers in the colonies of America, 17-year-old pastor William Duke founded the first Methodist society in Alexandria, which would ultimately adopt the name Trinity United Methodist Church in 1883; and

WHEREAS, the congregation that would become Trinity United Methodist Church was there at the founding of the nation, and its preacher, James Tolleson, presented one of the memorial sermons sponsored by the citizens of Alexandria following the death of President George Washington; and

WHEREAS, since William Duke, the congregation of Trinity United Methodist Church has been subsequently led by several other accomplished pastors, all of whom have provided sage counsel to the church's members while working tirelessly to ensure the church's prosperity and longevity; and

WHEREAS, Trinity United Methodist Church has faced a number of calamities and upheavals over the past quarter-millennium, and in each instance its congregation has emerged stronger and more faithful; and

WHEREAS, Trinity United Methodist Church's legacy of outreach and service dates back to 1816 when the church established its Society for the Relief of the Poor; the church has since engaged in an untold number of mission and social work activities and made an impact in communities both locally and globally; and

WHEREAS, located in the Beverley Hills neighborhood since 1941, Trinity United Methodist Church proudly opens its doors to people of all walks of life without exception, recognizing the sacred worth and dignity of all individuals; and

WHEREAS, over the past 250 years, Trinity United Methodist Church has been the spiritual home for its many members who have found joy and a greater sense of purpose within its walls; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Trinity United Methodist Church of Alexandria as its congregation celebrates the church's 250th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Grace Han, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the church's history and its contributions to the Commonwealth.
