WHEREAS, William A. Hazel, an admired businessman, farmer, developer, and contractor who helped construct much of the infrastructure that residents of Northern Virginia use today and a thoughtful philanthropist whose generosity touched countless individuals, died on September 3, 2012; and WHEREAS, a graduate of Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, William Hazel proudly served his country in the United States Army and returned to work on the family farm before starting an excavation company, William A. Hazel, Inc., with a bulldozer he ran himself; and WHEREAS, through hard work and visionary leadership, William Hazel built his company into one of Northern Virginia's largest total site development firms, specializing in earthmoving and infrastructure work, with over a thousand skilled employees and a battery of heavy equipment; and WHEREAS, William Hazel oversaw such projects as the Dulles Town Center, Burke Centre Shopping Center, the Ashburn Farm housing development, business offices, schools, and hospitals across Northern Virginia; and WHEREAS, William Hazel's company, known for its bright red trucks, has paved more than 1,000 miles of roads and highways over the years, helping keep Northern Virginia residents and visitors on the move; and WHEREAS, a savvy businessman focused on providing outstanding customer service, William Hazel often partnered with his older brother, Til, on projects and operated his own development company, Cavalier Land Development, for several years; and WHEREAS, a vital part of the growth and development of Northern Virginia, William Hazel remained as chief executive officer of William A. Hazel, Inc., until 2008, and served as chairman of the board until his death; and WHEREAS, a man of great foresight, William Hazel recognized the importance of education and donated millions of dollars to educational groups, opening doors for young people around the Commonwealth; and WHEREAS, William Hazel played a pivotal role in the establishment of Lord Fairfax Community College, contributed to George Mason University, and served on the boards of the Virginia Literacy Foundation, Virginia Military Institute, Shenandoah University, several private schools, and Youth for Tomorrow; and WHEREAS, a respected leader, William Hazel provided valuable insight and guidance as a member of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, the Washington Airports Task Force, and the Northern Virginia Roundtable; and WHEREAS, a truly compassionate man, William Hazel often worked behind the scenes, anonymously donating funds to help a wide array of organizations and individuals in need; and WHEREAS, from the driver's seat of a bulldozer to a chair in the boardroom, William Hazel played an influential role in the growth and development of Northern Virginia and leaves behind an enduring legacy of service to the area he helped build; and WHEREAS, William Hazel will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Eleanor; children, Bill, Jr., Ruth, Jeannie, David, and Danny, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, employees, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired businessman, dedicated philanthropist, and respected Virginian, William A. Hazel; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William A. Hazel as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
