HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 943
Celebrating the life of Joseph Preble Weeks.

WHEREAS, Joseph Preble Weeks, a retired United States Army Ranger and political organizer from Manakin, died on August 11, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a Washington native, Joseph "Joe" Preble Weeks graduated with a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Virginia in 1959, attended the Naval War College, and earned a master's degree in management from Troy State University in 1976; and

WHEREAS, during his career in the United States Army, Joe Weeks served as a Ranger with the Special Forces and as an officer with the Transportation Corps in West Germany, Vietnam, Turkey, Louisiana, Texas, and Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Joe Weeks retired from military service with the rank of lieutenant colonel after 21 years of active duty service; and

WHEREAS, upon his retirement, Joe Weeks became active with the Virginia Republican Party, working on multiple campaigns during the 1980s and 1990s and chairing the Stafford County Republican Committee; and

WHEREAS, Joe Weeks directed field operations for the Virginia effort for the presidential campaign in 1984 and acted as a political consultant for several gubernatorial and other state level campaigns; and

WHEREAS, Joe Weeks offered his many years of political expertise to and served as the vice-chairman of the 7th Congressional District Republican Committee; and

WHEREAS, in 1984 Joe Weeks became the third generation of his family to assume the management of Rochambeau, the family apple orchard in Goochland County; in 1988 he and his wife, Sue, made the farm their permanent home; and

WHEREAS, Joe Weeks will be remembered by his wife of 36 years, Susan; his children, Ursel and Joseph; his grandchildren Erin, Francesca, Parker, and Cailin; and many family members and friends in Manakin; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Joseph Preble Weeks; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joseph Preble Weeks as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
