HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 120
Commending the Next Generation Choices Foundation.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 19, 2024
 

WHEREAS, the Next Generation Choices Foundation, commonly known by the name of its Less Cancer campaign, celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2024; and

WHEREAS, founded in 2004 with a vision to lower the risk of cancer in certain health-affected communities such as schools, Next Generation Choices Foundation's Less Cancer campaign has broadened into a multi-pronged approach to shift the paradigm for addressing cancer from treatment to prevention, with a focus on education, advocacy, and public participation; and

WHEREAS, to better inform physicians, nurses, and other health professionals on cancer prevention topics, Less Cancer supports nursing scholarships, as well as continuing education programs in coordination with the University of Virginia School of Medicine and other organizations; and

WHEREAS, Less Cancer has implemented strategies and platforms for public health education that emphasize developing risk-reduction strategies, modifying community or corporate practices and products, forging synergies with business and industry, and creating more options for healthy choices; and

WHEREAS, Less Cancer spearheaded the establishment of National Cancer Prevention Day on February 4 each year, as well as Cancer Prevention Day in the Commonwealth and several other states, creating opportunities to spread awareness of ways to reduce the incidence of cancer with policymakers and the public; and

WHEREAS, Less Cancer connects with its audience through both innovative online programming, such as its LessCancer.com website and blogs, and engaging offline programming, such as fundraisers and panel discussions with health care systems, community organizations, health-affected constituencies, schools, and more; and

WHEREAS, in addressing health and environmental factors, the Less Cancer campaign promises to be particularly beneficial for at-risk and underrepresented communities such as children, low-income families, and workers; and

WHEREAS, the accomplishments of the Less Cancer campaign are the result of the visionary leadership of the founder of the Next Generation Choices Foundation, William U. Couzens, and the organization's board of directors, the tireless efforts of the organization's staff, and the effective collaboration between the organization and its partners; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Next Generation Choices Foundation hereby be commended for the success of its Less Cancer campaign on the occasion of its 20th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to William U. Couzens, founder of the Next Generation Choices Foundation, as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the organization's efforts to prevent cancer in the United States.
