WHEREAS, Melissa Marie Hales, a special education teacher assisting students with multiple disabilities at Crossroads School, was named a Norfolk City Public Schools citywide Teacher of the Year in 2024; and
WHEREAS, inspired by many of the educators from whom she learned as a student, as well as her grandmother, who was a teacher with Norfolk City Public Schools for 30 years, Melissa Hales has worked tirelessly to cultivate a learning environment at Crossroads School that supports the academic, social, and emotional well-being of her students; and
WHEREAS, over her 25 years as an educator, Melissa Hales has continually honed her teaching abilities through further education and training to make a difference in the lives of the students she serves; and
WHEREAS, Melissa Hales has nurtured the success of her colleagues as her school's multiple disabilities team leader and as a mentor to new teachers who have recently joined Norfolk City Public Schools; and
WHEREAS, Melissa Hales has given generously of her time to assist her community through her involvement with the Norfolk Environmental Commission, the Special Olympics Virginia, and her church; and
WHEREAS, Melissa Hales has embodied the highest ideals of the education profession through her unwavering commitment to her students and fellow faculty members, earning the praise and admiration of all Virginians; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Melissa Marie Hales hereby be commended for being named a 2024 Norfolk City Public Schools citywide Teacher of the Year; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Melissa Marie Hales as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for her contributions to the Commonwealth.
