WHEREAS, Harry Gilbert Miller III, a leader in the field of large scale systems engineering and acquisition projects for government agencies who was corporate vice president and chief technology officer at Noblis, Inc., vice chair of an advisory board for the Volgenau School of Engineering at George Mason University, and a devoted husband and father, died on November 8, 2015; and WHEREAS, Harry Gilbert "Gil" Miller III earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University, and a doctoral degree from Carnegie-Mellon University; and WHEREAS, Gil Miller spent his career working on science and technology projects for numerous federal agencies; he had been an employee of Noblis, a nonprofit science and technology organization, and its predecessor, MITRE Corporation, since 1974; and WHEREAS, a well-regarded expert in information technology, networks and telecommunications, high performance computing, and acquisition strategy, Gil Miller most recently had focused on advancing Noblis' science and technology base to meet the future needs of its clients; and WHEREAS, giving back to the community was important to Gil Miller, and the Commonwealth has benefited from it; he most recently served as vice chair of the Dean's Advisory Board of the Volgenau School of Engineering at George Mason University, and was a member of the Northern Virginia Technology Council; and WHEREAS, Gil Miller was passionate about the importance of education, and in his advisory role at George Mason University, he was a tireless advocate for the school and encouraged the development of internship programs; and WHEREAS, recognizing the urgent need that Northern Virginia technology firms have for well-qualified employees and aware of the many challenges that lie ahead for the nation, Gil Miller supported science, technology, engineering, and math education for students of all ages; and WHEREAS, Gil Miller will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Dot; children, Matthew, Kristin, and Ryan, and their families; and many other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Harry Gilbert Miller III, corporate vice president and chief technology officer for Noblis, Inc., and an ardent supporter of science, technology, engineering, and math education in the Commonwealth; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Harry Gilbert Miller III as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory. |
