SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 111
Commending Simpson Development Company, Inc.

WHEREAS, over the past 100 years, Simpson Development Company, Inc., a family-owned business in Alexandria, has grown from a small masonry company into a company that currently provides a range of real estate development and property management services; and

WHEREAS, Simpson Development Company traces its roots to 1924, when five brothers formed Simpson Masonry Company; the original crew consisted of the five Simpson brothers and six other employees; and

WHEREAS, Simpson Masonry Company completed more than 100 masonry and stone building projects, including churches, warehouses, residential apartment buildings, and single-family dwellings; and

WHEREAS, in 1950, Eugene and Clarence Simpson greatly expanded the business, forming a full-service general contracting firm that was responsible for 400 commercial projects throughout Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., including offices, hotels, schools, shopping centers, warehouses, apartments, and government buildings; and

WHEREAS, Simpson Development Company and Simpson Properties, Ltd., were subsequently formed to strengthen the business's portfolio with corporate real estate and property management services; and

WHEREAS, Donald "Don" Simpson, Jr., the grandson of Clarence Simpson, currently serves as president of Simpson Development Company and vice president of Simpson Properties; under his leadership, the family business manages more than one million square feet of office space and develops tens of thousands of square feet each year; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of T.C. Williams High School and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Don Simpson, Jr., has helped Simpson Development Company continue to provide outstanding service to clients while supporting the local community; and

WHEREAS, Don Simpson, Jr., has guided Simpson Development Company to provide generous donations to several nonprofit organizations, including Senior Services of Alexandria and the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria; he is also the chair of the INOVA Alexandria Hospital Foundation board and an active member of the Alexandria Youth Sports Commission and the Rotary Club of Alexandria; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his personal and professional accomplishments, Don Simpson, Jr., was selected as a Living Legend of Alexandria in 2020 and was named the Business Leader of the Year by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce in 2023; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Simpson Development Company, Inc., on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Don Simpson, Jr., president of Simpson Development Company, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the company's long history and numerous accomplishments in service to the Alexandria community.
