SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 133
Celebrating the life of Deriek Wayne Crouse.

WHEREAS, a loving family and the Virginia Tech community suffered a tremendous loss when Deriek Wayne Crouse, a member of the Virginia Tech Police Department, died in the line of duty on December 8, 2011, while responding to a routine traffic stop; and

WHEREAS, as a young man, Deriek Crouse joined the United States Army, spending three years mainly at Fort Hood, Texas, and upon his honorable discharge, continued to serve his country in the Army Reserve while returning to civilian life; and

WHEREAS, Deriek Crouse pursued his interest in public safety and criminal justice, graduating from the New River Criminal Justice Training Academy and working at the New River Valley Jail and Montgomery County Sheriff's Department; and

WHEREAS, deployed to Iraq for over a year, Deriek Crouse drove supplies across treacherous desert roads as a member of the 424th Transportation Company and retired as a reservist in May 2011, having earned the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; and

WHEREAS, Deriek Crouse joined the Virginia Tech Police Department on October 27, 2007, receiving his law-enforcement certification from the Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy and completing training as a Crisis Intervention Team member, general instructor, firearms instructor, defensive tactics instructor, and Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response and Mechanical and Ballistic instructor; and

WHEREAS, a valued member of the patrol division, Deriek Crouse received a department award in 2008 for his commitment to efforts to curb driving under the influence and had been a member of the Virginia Tech Police Emergency Response Team since February 2011; and

WHEREAS, respected by his colleagues for his strong work ethic and commitment to public service, Deriek Crouse responded to numerous calls on the Virginia Tech campus and took pride in helping protect students, faculty, and staff as they worked and studied; and

WHEREAS, the tragic loss of Deriek Crouse is a solemn reminder of the perils faced daily by those who serve and protect others as law-enforcement professionals; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Deriek Crouse will be greatly missed by his wife, Tina; son, Dustin; stepchildren, Logan, Hayden, Tyler, and Peyton; parents, Tony and Bonita; brothers, Darris and Kevin; his fellow officers; and the Virginia Tech community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected law-enforcement professional, Deriek Wayne Crouse; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Deriek Wayne Crouse as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
