SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 155
Celebrating the life of Thomas Chandler Northam.

WHEREAS, Thomas Chandler Northam of Parksley, a respected citizen, beloved coach, and community supporter, died on October 28, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a native of Virginia's Eastern Shore, Thomas "Tommy" Northam was the son of John Edwards Northam and Helen Phillips Northam; and

WHEREAS, Tommy Northam graduated with the Class of 1968 from Onancock High School, and he received a bachelor's degree from the University of Richmond; and

WHEREAS, possessing a tremendous work ethic, Tommy Northam was a hardworking, professional truck driver for Eagle Transport; and

WHEREAS, Tommy Northam's true passion was sports, and he was a caring mentor and role model for young people as a dedicated and longtime coach for Broadwater Academy, a family-oriented private school in Exmore; and

WHEREAS, a gifted coach who had the ability to help develop his players' best attributes, Tommy Northam touched the lives of many rising young Eastern Shore athletes; and

WHEREAS, Tommy Northam was a faithful member of the Market Street United Methodist Church in Onancock and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Tommy Northam will be fondly remembered for his love of his family and his hometown on Virginia's beautiful Eastern Shore and greatly missed by his wife of 28 years, Jill Brinkley Northam; his devoted daughters, Sara and Christy, and their families; his numerous other family members and friends; his former players; and the citizens of Parksley; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine community supporter, coach, and outstanding Virginian, Thomas Chandler Northam; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Thomas Chandler Northam as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
