WHEREAS, Buckingham County, formed on May 1, 1761, by the Virginia House of Burgesses, will celebrate its historic 250th anniversary in 2011; and WHEREAS, Buckingham County was originally part of Albemarle County; the origins of its name are unknown, though the first known reference appeared in a land patent from 1729 signed by then Governor William Gooch, which granted Henry Cary "3,942 acres at a place called Buckingham"; and WHEREAS, over the years, the name became more common in local records and in the 1750s, Buckingham plantation, the property of Henry Cary's son, Colonel Archibald Cary, appeared on the famous Fry-Jefferson map; and WHEREAS, after Colonel Archibald Cary's death, his property was divided among family members and the plantations carved from his land, such as Red Oak, Half Way Branch, Taylor's Branch, and Carywood, became familiar names; and WHEREAS, decades later, Buckingham County residents fought and died alongside other Virginians during the Civil War, and General Robert E. Lee marched his army through Buckingham County on his way to surrender at Appomattox; and WHEREAS, today, Buckingham County has two stops on Lee's Retreat, a self-guided driving tour that allows visitors to follow the historic march; and WHEREAS, one of the largest counties in the state, Buckingham County boasts two state parks that provide a wealth of recreational opportunities for hikers, bikers, and campers; and WHEREAS, conveniently located near major highways and local colleges and universities, Buckingham County residents enjoy easy access to Charlottesville, Farmville, and Richmond while local businesses provide needed services and products; and WHEREAS, over the years, Buckingham County residents have played a vital role in the growth and development of the Commonwealth and nation and will kick-off the year's celebration on April 2 with a Buckingham County birthday party followed by Buckingham County Day on May 14; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Buckingham County on the occasion of its 250th anniversary; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to E.A. Talbert, chairman of the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes for a festive anniversary celebration and continued success in the county's future endeavors. |
