SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 48
Celebrating the life of Jack D. Cole, D.D.S.

 

Agreed to by the Senate, February 8, 2024

 

WHEREAS, Jack D. Cole, D.D.S., a distinguished dentist and active and beloved member of the Abingdon community, died on January 11, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Jack Cole graduated in 1951 from Chilhowie High School, where he excelled as a trombonist in the school band and lettered in four different sports; and

WHEREAS, after earning a bachelor's degree in chemistry and mathematics from what is today the University of Lynchburg, Jack Cole worked briefly as a high school basketball coach, teacher, research chemist, graduate school instructor, and registered nurse; and

WHEREAS, Jack Cole fulfilled a lifelong dream of a career in medicine by attaining a doctor of dental surgery degree from what was then the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry; and

WHEREAS, Jack Cole embarked upon a dental career that would span nearly a half-century when he joined the staff at what was formerly the Southwestern Virginia State Hospital in Marion in 1960; and

WHEREAS, a year later, Jack Cole opened his own private practice in Glade Spring, and in 1970, moved his office to Abingdon, where he would masterfully serve the dental hygiene and surgery needs of the community until his retirement in 2008; and

WHEREAS, Jack Cole gave generously of his time to support the Southwest Virginia community by serving with a number of professional and charitable associations and societies on both the local and state levels; and

WHEREAS, Jack Cole was an avid golfer whose love for the game led him to serve two terms as president of Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon; and

WHEREAS, guided by his faith, Jack Cole rededicated his life to God at the age of 73 and was baptized in South Holston Lake; and

WHEREAS, Jack Cole will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his wife, Joy; his children, James, Anthony, and Jennifer, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Jack D. Cole, D.D.S., a cherished member of the Abingdon community whose dedication and service were an inspiration to all who knew him; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jack D. Cole, D.D.S., as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for his memory.
