SENATE RESOLUTION 13

Recognizing Myles Lumber Company of Randolph County, West Virginia, as West Virginia's Outstanding Tree Farmer for 2023.

Whereas, Myles Lumber Company, a family-owned timber company since 1950, owns and manages almost 10,000 acres of high-quality hardwoods of forestland with the majority of the acres managed in Randolph County, and other acreage managed in Upshur County, West Virginia; and

Whereas, Since 1951, Myles Lumber Company has been dedicated to taking care of the land that it acquired using comprehensive forest management and numerous silvicultural treatments.  The Myles Lumber Company is home to some of the most intensive forest management of any large landowner in West Virginia; and

Whereas, Myles Lumber Company is currently under the supervision of the daughter, June Myles, who primarily manages the land for forest management, wildlife habitat improvement and maintaining water quality. A small staff is employed to oversee timber harvests, maintain road infrastructure, log yard, and storage facilities; and

Whereas, Myles Lumber Company was selected as West Virginia’s Outstanding Tree Farmer for 2023, by the West Virginia Tree Farm Committee and its State Sponsor, the West Virginia Forestry Association; and

Whereas, Myles Lumber Company made a formal commitment to sound forest management practices by enrolling in the West Virginia Tree Farm Program; and

Whereas, Myles Lumber Company manages stands for wildlife habitat, clean water, and controlling invasive species, and shares their conservation ethic with other landowners; and

Whereas, Tree farmers play a critical role in the economy of West Virginia, with over 60 percent of all timber harvested in our state coming from private woodlands; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate hereby recognizes Myles Lumber Company of Randolph County, West Virginia, as West Virginia's Outstanding Tree Farmer for 2023; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to Myles Lumber Company.
