Commemorating the 150th anniversary of Keyser, West Virginia.
Whereas, Keyser, the historic county seat of Mineral County, West Virginia, is celebrating a significant milestone reaching their 150th anniversary of establishment as a vibrant community nestled on the North Branch of the Potomac River; and
Whereas, Keyser's rich history reflects its evolution from early land grants, including Lord Fairfax's grant to Christopher Beelor in 1752, through its various names such as Paddy Town, the Irish Settlement, and New Creek Station, to its final designation as Keyser, named after William Keyser, a distinguished Baltimore, and Ohio Railroad official; and
Whereas, The town's history is intertwined with the expansion of transportation infrastructure, including the proposed Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, both of which played pivotal roles in Keyser's growth and economic prosperity; and
Whereas, Keyser's resilience was demonstrated during the American Civil War, when it became a battleground due to its strategic location and proximity to vital transportation routes; and
Whereas, Following the war, Keyser became the county seat of newly formed Mineral County in 1866, setting the stage for further development and growth as an integral part of West Virginia's heritage; and
Whereas, The incorporation of Keyser as a city on November 16, 1874, marked a turning point, bringing railroad headquarters, repair shops, and economic vibrancy, with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and other rail companies contributing significantly to the region's prosperity; and
Whereas, Keyser's economic landscape evolved through the 20th century, navigating challenges such as floods, economic fluctuations, and industrial transitions, while maintaining its essential role as a hub for education, healthcare, and community services; and
Whereas, The City of Keyser's journey has been illuminated by its historical landmarks, including the Thomas R. Carskadon House and the Mineral County Courthouse, both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and
Whereas, The citizens of Keyser have demonstrated their enduring spirit, adaptability, and unity in shaping the town's identity, fostering a sense of belonging and pride for generations; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby commemorates the 150th anniversary of Keyser, West Virginia; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Senate congratulates the City of Keyser on this milestone of reaching their 150th anniversary as a thriving community; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the appropriate representative of the City of Keyser.
