Relative to veterinary medicine.


LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


HR 61, as introduced, Lee.

WHEREAS, Companion animals must not be subjected to surgical procedures except where they provide treatment for physical medical conditions and anatomical pathology, or to prevent overpopulation; and
WHEREAS, A nontherapeutic purpose is any purpose other than to address an existing or recurring illness, disease, injury, birth defect, or abnormal condition that compromises the animal’s health; and
WHEREAS, Nontherapeutic procedures may be painful and can lead to unnecessary risks of infection and other complications, including anesthetic death; and
WHEREAS, Companion animal owners and guardians should only be offered humane, therapeutic procedures to help minimize and prevent unnecessary pain for their animals; and
WHEREAS, Veterinarians are urged to work with their clients to offer options and help their clients make the most humane decisions; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly is committed to sensible and humane therapeutic veterinary procedures for companion animals; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
