    2         A resolution recognizing April 1, 2014, as “FSU Day”
    3         in Florida.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State University
    6  is the oldest continuous site of higher education in Florida and
    7  holds the state’s first chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, which was
    8  chartered in 1935, and
    9         WHEREAS, in 1994, Florida State University joined an elite
   10  group of the nation’s top research universities, being
   11  designated as a “Research I” institution by the Carnegie
   12  Foundation, and
   13         WHEREAS, today, Florida State University offers graduate
   14  and undergraduate degrees in 314 programs within 16 independent
   15  colleges and schools, taught by a faculty of 2,094 members,
   16  which has included 17 National Academy of Sciences members and 6
   17  Nobel Laureates, and
   18         WHEREAS, the freshman class entering Florida State
   19  University in the Fall of 2013 was one of the most academically
   20  accomplished freshman classes in the university’s history, with
   21  an average high school GPA of 4.0, an average SAT score of
   22  1,830, and an average composite ACT score of 28, and
   23         WHEREAS, the academic accomplishments of accepted honors
   24  students entering Florida State University in the 2013 fall
   25  semester are even more impressive, with an average high school
   26  GPA of 4.4, an average SAT score of 1,958, and an average
   27  composite ACT score of 30, and
   28         WHEREAS, in 2014, for the second consecutive year, Florida
   29  State University was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the
   30  nation’s “Most Efficient” university, a recognition of the
   31  university’s efforts to provide the highest quality education
   32  with limited or reduced resources and its excellence in devoting
   33  these resources to student instruction, research, student
   34  services, and other related areas, and
   35         WHEREAS, the Florida State University College of Medicine
   36  celebrated placing its 100th new alumni physician in this state,
   37  with 60 percent of these graduates practicing primary care and
   38  22 percent caring for patients from rural communities, and
   39         WHEREAS, the Florida State University College of Medicine
   40  has launched a unique, statewide Clinical Research Network with
   41  the potential to involve a more representative sample of
   42  patients accurately reflecting Florida’s diverse population, and
   43         WHEREAS, the Florida State University football team capped
   44  a historic 2013 season by winning its third Bowl Championship
   45  Series National Championship and producing its third Heisman
   46  Memorial Trophy winner, quarterback Jameis Winston, and
   47         WHEREAS, the college experience continues to enrich the
   48  lives of Florida State University students due to its long
   49  standing tradition of promoting racial, ethnic, and cultural
   50  diversity on campus, along with the aggressive recruitment of
   51  diverse groups of students, NOW, THEREFORE,
   52  
   53  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   54  
   55         That the members of the Florida Senate recognize April 1,
   56  2014, as “FSU Day” in Florida, and celebrate Florida State
   57  University’s contribution as an outstanding institution of
   58  higher education.
   59         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
   60  presented to Florida State University President Eric J. Barron,
   61  Ph.D., as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed in this
   62  resolution.
