Florida Senate - 2014 CS for SB 1394 By the Committee on Appropriations; and Senator Legg 576-04545-14 20141394c1 1 A bill to be entitled 2 An act relating to education; amending s. 402.56, 3 F.S.; adding a superintendent of schools to the 4 membership of the Children and Youth Cabinet; amending 5 s. 1003.4285, F.S.; revising the requirements to earn 6 a Merit designation on a standard high school diploma; 7 providing an effective date. 8 9 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 10 11 Section 1. Paragraph (a) of subsection (4) of section 12 402.56, Florida Statutes, is amended to read: 13 402.56 Children’s cabinet; organization; responsibilities; 14 annual report.— 15 (4) MEMBERS.—The cabinet shall consist of 1614members 16 including the Governor and the following persons: 17 (a)1. The Secretary of Children and Family Services; 18 2. The Secretary of Juvenile Justice; 19 3. The director of the Agency for Persons with 20 Disabilities; 21 4. The director of the Office of Early Learning; 22 5. The State Surgeon General; 23 6. The Secretary of Health Care Administration; 24 7. The Commissioner of Education; 25 8. The director of the Statewide Guardian Ad Litem Office; 26 9. The director of the Office of Child Abuse Prevention; 27and28 10. A superintendent of schools, appointed by the Governor; 29 and 30 11.10.Five members representing children and youth 31 advocacy organizations, who are not service providers and who 32 are appointed by the Governor. 33 Section 2. Paragraph (b) of subsection (1) of section 34 1003.4285, Florida Statutes, is amended to read: 35 1003.4285 Standard high school diploma designations.— 36 (1) Each standard high school diploma shall include, as 37 applicable, the following designations if the student meets the 38 criteria set forth for the designation: 39 (b) Merit designation.—In addition to the requirements of 40 ss. 1003.428 and 1003.4282, as applicable, in order to earn the 41 Merit designation, a student must attain twooneor more 42 industry certifications from the list established under s. 43 1003.492. 44 Section 3. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law.
