RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Alpha Chi Lambda and the Eta Alpha Chapters of Alpha Phi
Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was the first intercollegiate Greek-letter
fraternity for African Americans and was founded in Ithaca, New York, by Henry
Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle
Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy,
known as the "Jewels," who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood
among African descendants in this country; and
WHEREAS,
with a membership of over 80,000 college educated men, Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity has members in over 700 college and alumni chapters throughout the
United States, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean who understand that their
greatest usefulness lies outside of themselves by leading the fight for human
rights and dignity and by working to aid and uplift the downtrodden;
and
WHEREAS,
for 103 years, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has been a beacon of light to the
community by staying true to its aims of Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for
all Mankind through such programs as Go to High School, Go to College; A
Voteless People is a Hopeless People; Project Alpha; and Alpha Head Start Male
Initiative Program; and
WHEREAS,
the Alpha Chi Lambda Chapter was founded on April 25, 1935, and the Eta Alpha
Chapter was founded on April 4, 1970, with both chapters making a difference in
the Central Savannah River Area through their various community service
endeavors such as awarding scholarships and sponsoring the Reverend Dr. King
Unity Breakfast; and
WHEREAS,
Alpha Chi Lambda can count among its membership such notable Augustans as John
M. Tutt, A. C. Griggs, former Mayor Edward McIntyre, former Commissioners Lee
Beard and Henry Brigham, Phil Waring, Dr. Mac A. Bowman, Richmond County
Superintendent Dr. Dana Bedden, and Director of Athletics George Bailey,
countless elected officials, educators, pastors, judges, directors,
entrepreneurs, and many others; and
WHEREAS,
the Alpha Chi Lambda Chapter is home to past Southern Region and 6th Georgia
District Director Chester A. Wheeler III, 10th Georgia District Director Ellis
Albright, former National Life membership chairman Bert Thomas, and Area 8
Director Augustus C. Thurmond; and
WHEREAS,
current and former fraternity officials of the Alpha Chi Lambda Chapter and the
Eta Alpha Chapter located at Paine/Augusta State will celebrate their 15th and
40th anniversaries on May 1, 2010; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding work of these fine
organizations and their numerous contributions to the citizens of this state be
appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and the Chapters of Alpha
Chi Lambda and Eta Alpha for their outstanding contributions to this nation and
the State of Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the Alpha Chi
Lambda and Eta Alpha Chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
