THIRTIETH LEGISLATURE, 2020

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

URGING all commercial airlines operating in Hawaii to thoroughly clean and disinfect their aircraft between flights to prevent the spread of illnesses and diseases, including COVID-19.

WHEREAS, the World Health Organization (WHO) has urged nations around the world to prepare for the possibility of COVID-19 becoming a global pandemic; and

WHEREAS, currently, thirty-seven countries, including the United States, have confirmed cases of COVID-19, totaling 80,419 infections and 3,711 deaths; and

WHEREAS, WHO predicts that the chance of a global pandemic is slowly increasing; and

WHEREAS, the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport handles an average of 850 flights and 57,534 passengers per day; and

WHEREAS, cooperation with commercial airlines is crucial in combatting the spread of COVID-19 and protecting public health; and

WHEREAS, the transmission of communicable diseases via surface contact aboard aircraft is preventable using low-cost, readily-accessible, easy-to-use cleaning equipment and supplies, including sanitary wipes and disinfectant spray; and

WHEREAS, there is an existing procedure to clean each row of an airplane cabin between flights, so adding the extra step of disinfecting is not unduly burdensome yet it is extremely important to prevent the further spread of illnesses and diseases, including COVID-19; now, therefore,
