A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to education.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§302A-    Youth risk behavior survey.  (a)  The department shall administer the youth risk behavior survey to students in grades six to twelve at each public school in odd-numbered years.

     (b)  The department shall allow a student to not participate in the youth risk behavior survey; provided that the student's parent or legal guardian submits written notification to the school stating that the parent or legal guardian does not give permission for that student to participate in the survey."

     SECTION 2.  Chapter 302C, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§302C-    Youth risk behavior survey.  (a)  Private schools shall administer the youth risk behavior survey to students in grades six to twelve in odd-numbered years.

     (b)  Private schools shall allow a student to not participate in the youth risk behavior survey; provided that the student's parent or legal guardian submits written notification to the school stating that the parent or legal guardian does not give permission for that student to participate in the survey."

     SECTION 3.  Chapter 302D, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§302D-    Youth risk behavior survey.  (a)  The department shall administer the youth risk behavior survey to students in grades six to twelve at each public charter school in odd-numbered years.

     (b)  The department shall allow a student to not participate in the youth risk behavior survey; provided that the student's parent or legal guardian submits written notification to the school stating that the parent or legal guardian does not give permission for that student to participate in the survey."

     SECTION 4.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 5.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.

Youth Risk Behavior Survey

 

Description:

Requires the department of education to administer the youth risk behavior survey to all public school and charter school students in odd-numbered years for grades six to twelve.  Requires all private schools to administer the youth risk behavior survey to all students in odd-numbered years for grades six to twelve.  Allows parents or legal guardians to exempt their child from participating in the survey.
