A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to education.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the late United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye had an unparalleled impact on Hawaii, its economy, and its people, and deserves a living memorial that will help future generations honor and recognize his legacy. Daniel Inouye was born in the Moiliili district of Honolulu on September 7, 1924. During World War II, he volunteered for combat with the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team. On April 21, 1945, Daniel Inouye destroyed several Nazi machine gun nests in the strip of fortifications known as the gothic line despite having his right arm shredded by a rifle grenade, which later necessitated amputation of the arm. For his actions and valor, Daniel Inouye was awarded the bronze star, the purple heart, and the distinguished service cross, which was later upgraded to the medal of honor. He was honorably discharged in 1947 with the rank of captain. Daniel Inouye was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1959 and to the United States Senate in 1962. He gained national recognition for his service on senate committees investigating the Watergate and Iran-Contra scandals. During his fifty-year tenure in the United States Senate, Senator Daniel Inouye was extremely successful at obtaining federal funds for Hawaii projects. In 2009, he became chairman of the United States Senate appropriations committee. When he died on December 17, 2012, United States Senator Daniel Inouye was senate president pro tempore, having achieved the distinction of being the second longest serving United States senator in history.
The purpose of this Act is to require the department of education to name the next public high school completed in his honor.
SECTION 2. The department of education shall name the next public high school completed the "Daniel Ken Inouye High School" in honor of the late United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
