HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance
3held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all
4faiths to pray for the nation; it was created in 1952 by a
5joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into
6law by President Harry S. Truman; and
7 WHEREAS, It exists to communicate with every individual the
8need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate
9materials, and to mobilize people to intercede for America's
10leaders and its families; and
11 WHEREAS, Because of the faith of many of our founding
12fathers, public prayer and national days of prayer have a
13long-standing and significant history in American tradition;
14and
15 WHEREAS, In 1988, the law was amended and signed by
16President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first
17Thursday of every May; each year, the president signs a
18proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day;
19last year, all 50 state governors plus the governors of several
20U.S. territories signed similar proclamations; and
21 WHEREAS, Like Thanksgiving and Christmas, this day is

1observed annually across the nation; and
2 WHEREAS, This year's theme for the National Day of Prayer
3is "Love One Another"; therefore, be it
4 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
5HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
6we recognize May 2, 2019 as the National Day of Prayer.
