HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Parliament of the
4World's Religions on its 130th anniversary and celebrate its
5return to the State of Illinois; and
6 WHEREAS, The first Parliament of the World's Religions was
7held in Chicago in 1893, marking the first formal gathering of
8representatives from various religious traditions from around
9the world; it returned to Chicago in 1993 to celebrate its
10100th year anniversary; and
11 WHEREAS, The Parliament of the World's Religions
12represented a historic moment of interfaith dialogue,
13understanding, and cooperation and paved the way for greater
14religious harmony and pluralism in the United States and
15beyond; and
16 WHEREAS, The Parliament of the World's Religions has
17continued to convene in cities around the world and will be
18returning to Chicago in August of 2023, promoting interfaith
19understanding and cooperation and advancing the cause of
20peace, justice, and sustainability across the globe; and
21 WHEREAS, Many distinguished leaders have spoken at the

1Parliament of World's Religions, including Nelson Mandela,
2Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Jane Goodall, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and
3President Jimmy Carter; and
4 WHEREAS, During the month of August in 2023, the
5Parliament of the World's Religions will generate over $10
6million in tourist and participant-related revenues for the
7local economy and provide over 4,000 hours of volunteer
8service benefiting local charitable initiatives; and
9 WHEREAS, Interfaith dialogue and cooperation is important
10and can promote a greater understanding and appreciation among
11people of different religious traditions; and
12 WHEREAS, August 2023 marks the return of the Parliament of
13the World's Religions to Illinois and provides an opportunity
14to celebrate the rich diversity of religious traditions and to
15reaffirm a commitment to promoting interfaith understanding
16and cooperation, defending freedom, and human rights;
17therefore, be it
18 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
19HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20we congratulate the Parliament of the World's Religions on its
21130th anniversary and celebrate its return to the State of
22Illinois; and be it further

1 RESOLVED, That we recognize the Parliament of the World's
2Religions' focus on defending freedom and human rights, the

8 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
