A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING EDITH FULLILOVE KITCHENS OF CRYSTAL SPRINGS, MISSISSIPPI, ON HER RECOGNITION AS MISSISSIPPI'S DISTINGUISHED OLDER AMERICAN BY THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES.

     WHEREAS, Edith Fullilove Kitchens of Crystal Springs, Mississippi, was recognized by the Division of Aging and Adult Services of the Mississippi Department of Human Services on May 5, 2011, as Mississippi's Distinguished Older American; and

     WHEREAS, through her lifelong love of music, Mrs. Kitchens has been an inspiration to her former and present piano students; and

     WHEREAS, born in Vaiden, Mississippi, in 1914, Mrs. Kitchens attended Vaiden High School and is the sole remaining member of her graduating class of 13 students; and

     WHEREAS, after graduating from Vaiden High School, Mrs. Kitchens attended Blue Mountain College as a music major and commercial business minor; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Kitchens began teaching piano lessons when she returned home from college after the start of the Great Depression and she plans to continue teaching for quite some time; and

     WHEREAS, while attending summer school at Mississippi State University, she met and later married Mr. Lloyd Wade Kitchens with whom she raised three sons:  Jim, Lloyd Wade, Jr., and Dick; and

     WHEREAS, as a member of MacDowell Music Club of Crystal Springs, the Golden Choir, the Mississippi Genealogical Society and the Copiah County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mrs. Kitchens is a well-respected member of her community; and

     WHEREAS, having taught piano to hundreds of students and having played for numerous celebrations of life and other special occasions, including serving as the organist for more than 40 years at First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, Mrs. Kitchens has been a remarkable pillar of vivacity amongst the members of her family, church and peers; and

     WHEREAS, over the past 48 years, during the month of May, our nation has paused to reflect and honor older Americans and their contributions to society; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend outstanding service and dedication of citizens such as Mrs. Kitchens, who has been an ardent and considerate teacher to hundreds of students over the years and a cherished and familiar friend to members of her family, church and community:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Edith Fullilove Kitchens on her recognition as Mississippi's Distinguished Older American by the Division of Aging and Adult Services of the Mississippi Department of Human Services, and extend best wishes on all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Edith Fullilove Kitchens and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
