A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION EXTENDING THE RECOGNITION OF THE MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE TO SYLVIA GREEN JACKSON OF GREENVILLE, MISSISSIPPI, AND COMMENDING HER LASTING LEGACY OF ADVOCACY ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AFTER 46 YEARS OF SERVICE AS DIRECTOR OF THE AREA AGENCY ON AGING FOR THE SOUTH DELTA PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT DISTRICT.

     WHEREAS, we join the citizens of the Mississippi Delta in commending the public service and lasting legacy of a Greenville, Mississippi, icon.  On January 8, 2019, the Board of Directors of the South Delta Planning and Development District accepted Mrs. Sylvia Greene Jackson's "Intent to Retire Letter" effective March 29, 2019.  For 46 years, Mrs. Jackson has served as the Director of the Area Agency on Aging for the South Delta Planning and Development District which serves the Counties of Bolivar, Humphreys, Issaquena, Sharkey, Sunflower and Washington.  Mrs. Jackson has been a true trailblazer in the State of Mississippi and in the fight to protect and expand the services for the aging population; and

     WHEREAS, "I'm proud to have worked with Mrs. Jackson," said Tommy Goodwin, Executive Director of the South Delta Planning and Development District.  "She has been a friend, mother figure and an example of a hard worker"; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Jackson began her career at the South Delta Planning and Development District as the Research Assistant.  In a short time, she became the Director of the Area Agency on Aging; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Jackson obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from Mississippi Valley State University.  Before walking through the doors of the South Delta Planning and Development District, she worked for the Greenville Public School District and the City of Greenville; and

     WHEREAS, South Delta Planning and Development District provides services to six counties and 35 municipalities.  The six counties are Bolivar, Sunflower, Washington, Issaquena, Humphreys and Sharkey.  The district has undergone continual change since its inception in its quest to provide increased services to area citizens.  However, the district has always considered its prime objective to be assistance to local units of government; and

     WHEREAS, thanks to Mrs. Jackson's leadership, the South Delta Planning and Development District continues to provide technical assistance to the counties and municipalities in their varied activities.  There are 56 employees and a wide variety of governmental agencies.  Adult services also include Meals on Wheels and Homemaker.  Through the services they provide, they handle $38 Million in total; and

     WHEREAS, we recognize and honor Mrs. Sylvia Greene Jackson for her hard work and dedicated service to the State of Mississippi and the South Delta Planning and Development District for 46-plus years.  Mrs. Jackson is a wonderful example for public servants and we commend her record of achievement and dedication to the aging population of the Mississippi Delta and to all in Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby extend the recognition of the Mississippi Legislature to Sylvia Greene Jackson of Greenville, Mississippi, and commend her lasting legacy of advocacy on the occasion of her retirement after 46 years of service as Director of the Area Agency on Aging for the South Delta Planning and Development District, and extend our best wishes on this auspicious occasion.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Mrs. Jackson, forwarded to the South Delta Planning and Development District, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
