Senate Resolution 91

A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE SENSE OF THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE THAT FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP IS BEING UNFAIRLY TARGETED AND THAT HE IS INNOCENT OF THE ACCUSATIONS THAT HE ENGAGED IN INSURRECTION OR REBELLION AGAINST THE UNITED STATES.

WHEREAS, the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, has been constantly harassed and targeted by unethical and lawless political enemies and operatives, beginning with the Steele dossier, which even the New York Times now admits has been "discredited" as "Democrat-funded opposition research" consisting of "a compendium of rumors and unproven assertions"; and

WHEREAS, a four-year investigation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) concluded that the FBI "failed to uphold their important mission of strict fidelity to the law" by unfairly targeting President Trump's campaign with baseless requests for surveillance warrants; and

WHEREAS, 40,000 hours of security footage from January 6, 2021, demonstrations at the U.S. Capitol show that the protests cannot be accurately defined as an "armed insurrection," except by those wishing to grossly exaggerate the historical record; and

WHEREAS, according to Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and constitutional attorney, Glenn Greenwald, the special House of Representatives Select Committee seeking to investigate the events of January 6 "is arguably the greatest 1/6-related civil liberties abuse of them all" because it aggregated unto itself unlimited powers to investigate, interrogate and harass American citizens, powers "the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly prohibited Congress from attempting to perform"; and

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Goitein, co-director of the Brennan Center for Justice's Liberty and National Security Program cautions that Congress' investigative "authority is not limitless. … It does not override the individual rights set forth in the Constitution"; and

WHEREAS, the indictments brought against President Donald J. Trump and his colleagues by Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis have been compromised by a conflict of interest and the appearance of impropriety:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby affirm that former President Donald J. Trump did not engage in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or give aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be transmitted to each state-elected official of Mississippi; each member of the United States House of Representatives and Senate elected to represent the State of Mississippi; the President of the United States; the United States Attorney General; the District Attorney of Fulton County, Georgia; and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
