A HOUSE RESOLUTION honoring the life and memory of jeanne tucker fenner, former member of the general assembly.

Whereas, Jeanne Tucker Fenner was born on September 3, 1933, in Washington, DC, to Herbert A. Tucker and Geraldine Struble Tucker; and

Whereas, Jeanne Tucker Fenner attended Atlantic Christian College; and

Whereas, Jeanne Tucker Fenner took an active role in many organizations, serving as President of the North Carolina Association for Retarded Citizens, Chair of the North Carolina Guardianship Council, a charter member of the Wilson Arc, and as a member of the Advisory Committee for Youthful Offenders Project in Wilson County, the Wilson Civitan Club, the Board of Directors of St. John A.M.E. Day Care Center, and the North Carolina Task Force on Disability Review; and

Whereas, after being appointed to fill a vacancy in the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1980, Jeanne Tucker Fenner was elected to two additional terms in 1981 and 1983, and served with honor and distinction and represented the people of Wilson, Nash, and Edgecombe Counties; and

Whereas, during her tenure in the General Assembly, Jeanne Tucker Fenner was chair of the Commissions and Schools for the Blind and Deaf, vice‑chair of Governmental Ethics and Mental Health, and a member of several other committees, including Appropriations, Education, Health, Judiciary, and State Government; and

Whereas, Jeanne Tucker Fenner was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wilson, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and circle Bible moderator; and

Whereas, Jeanne Tucker Fenner was honored as Layman of the Year in 1976 by the North Carolina Association for Retarded Citizens and Legislator of the Year in 1981 by the North Carolina Mental Health Centers Association; received the Service to Mankind Award in 1978 from the Wilson Sertoma Club; received both the Dybward International Award in 1979 and the National Member of the Year Award in 1980 from the National Association for Retarded Citizens; and received the Distinguished Service Award in 1983 from the Association of Directors of Developmental Disability Centers; and

Whereas, Jeanne Tucker Fenner died on December 23, 2010, at the age of 77; and

Whereas, Jeanne Tucker Fenner is survived by her husband, William Fenner, Sr.; her children, William, Edwin, Thomas, Elizabeth, and Ashley; her twin sister, Dawn Matthews; three other sisters; four brothers; and eight grandchildren; Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

SECTION 1.  The House of Representatives honors the memory of Jeanne Tucker Fenner and expresses the appreciation of this body for the service she rendered to the State and her community.

SECTION 2.  The House of Representatives extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Jeanne Tucker Fenner for the loss of a beloved family member.

SECTION 3.  The Principal Clerk shall transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the family of Jeanne Tucker Fenner.

SECTION 4.  This resolution is effective upon adoption.
