SYNOPSIS

     Provides for increased penalties for a crime committed in a church, synagogue, temple or other place of public worship.

An Act concerning criminal penalties and supplementing Title 2C of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.  Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, any person who commits a crime in a church, synagogue, temple or other place of public worship or on any property used for religious purposes shall be sentenced to a term of imprisonment appropriate to a crime one degree higher than that of the crime for which he is convicted.

 

     2.  This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill would provide that any person who commits a crime in a church, synagogue, temple or other place of public worship or on any property used for religious purposes would be sentenced to a term of imprisonment appropriate to a crime one degree higher than that of the crime for which he is convicted.
