SYNOPSIS
Urges Congress to enact legislation to extend unemployment benefits for laid off workers.

A Senate Resolution urging Congress to enact legislation to extend unemployment benefits for laid off workers.
Whereas, The current recession is the most severe economic downturn since the Great Depression, causing the loss of more than half a million jobs in the State of New Jersey; and
Whereas, Federal extensions of unemployment benefits provide an essential support to unemployed workers and their families, as well as to the institutions and businesses in their communities which rely on their patronage for their continued solvency; and
Whereas, In late December of 2011, Congress and President Obama acted to extend the federal program of unemployment benefits, which would have expired on December 31st of 2011, for two months, through February of 2012; and
Whereas, While this two-month extension provides workers with vital unemployment benefits through January and February, it is essential for Congress to extend this lifeline to unemployed workers throughout 2012; and
Whereas, An estimated six million workers will not have access to federal unemployment benefits in 2012 unless the program is renewed; and
Whereas, If Congress had failed to extend unemployment benefits in 2010, an estimated 3.2 million people, including almost one million children, would have fallen into poverty; and
Whereas, Unemployment benefits provide an important stimulus not only for the recipients, but also for businesses and institutions in areas of high unemployment, as the benefits are spent at local grocery stores, gas stations, and other retailers and service providers; and
Whereas, Unless Congress acts, nearly two million unemployed Americans will see their unemployment benefits cut off and millions more will see their benefits expire over the coming months; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:
1. The Congress of the United States is respectfully urged to enact legislation to extend unemployment insurance benefits for laid off workers.
2. Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the President of the Senate and attested by the Secretary thereof, shall be transmitted to the presiding officers of the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, and to each member of Congress elected from the State of New Jersey.

This resolution urges Congress to enact legislation to extend unemployment insurance benefits to laid off workers.
