          referred to the Committee  on  Election  Law  --  recommitted  to  the
          Committee  on  Election Law in accordance with Assembly Rule 3, sec. 2
          -- advanced to a third reading, amended and ordered reprinted, retain-
          ing its place on the order of third reading

        AN ACT to amend the election law, in relation  to  filing  name  of  new
          political party

          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:

     1    Section 1. Subdivision 1 of section  2-124  of  the  election  law  is
     2  amended to read as follows:
     3    1.  The  state  committee of a party shall select a name and emblem to
     4  distinguish the candidates  of  the  party  for  public  office  in  all
     5  districts  of the state, and shall file in the office of the state board
     6  of elections, a certificate executed  by  its  chairman  and  secretary,
     7  setting  forth the name and showing the emblem so selected.  A new party
     8  shall file such first certificate not later than the last day of  Febru-
     9  ary  following  the election at which the party obtains party status and
    10  shall take effect upon filing.
    11    § 2. This act shall take effect on the first of January after it shall
    12  have become a law.
