Bill Title: Establishes the crime of assault on a sports official or sports team coach when an individual causes physical injury to a sports official or coach prior to, during, or immediately following an interscholastic, intercollegiate, or any other organized amateur contest in which such sports official or sports team coach is participating, where the person committing the offense knows or reasonably should have known that the victim was a sports official or sports team coach; assault on a sports official or sports team coach is a class A misdemeanor.

       AN  ACT to amend the penal law, in relation to the crime of assault on a
         sports official or sports team coach
         THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
       BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
    1    Section  1. The penal law is amended by adding a new section 120.09 to
    2  read as follows:
    3  S 120.09 ASSAULT ON A SPORTS OFFICIAL OR SPORTS TEAM COACH.
    4    A PERSON IS GUILTY OF ASSAULT ON A  SPORTS  OFFICIAL  OR  SPORTS  TEAM
    5  COACH  WHEN  HE  OR  SHE  CAUSES PHYSICAL INJURY TO A SPORTS OFFICIAL OR
    6  COACH PRIOR TO, DURING, OR  IMMEDIATELY  FOLLOWING  AN  INTERSCHOLASTIC,
    7  INTERCOLLEGIATE,  OR  ANY  OTHER ORGANIZED AMATEUR CONTEST IN WHICH SUCH
    8  SPORTS OFFICIAL OR SPORTS TEAM COACH IS PARTICIPATING, WHERE THE  PERSON
    9  COMMITTING  THE  OFFENSE  KNOWS OR REASONABLY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT THE
   10  VICTIM WAS A SPORTS OFFICIAL OR SPORTS TEAM COACH.  FOR PURPOSES OF THIS
   11  SECTION "SPORTS OFFICIAL" SHALL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO A REFEREE,
   12  UMPIRE, OR LINESMAN, A "SPORTS TEAM  COACH"  SHALL  INCLUDE  COACHES  OF
   13  TEAMS AND INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPANTS, AND COACHING ASSISTANTS.
   14    ASSAULT  ON A SPORTS OFFICIAL OR SPORTS TEAM COACH IS A CLASS A MISDE-
   15  MEANOR.
   16    S 2. This act shall take effect on the first of November next succeed-
   17  ing the date on which it shall have become a law.
