Senate Resolution No. 1296 BY: Senator HARCKHAM MOURNING the death of Margaret Hanrahan, family matriarch, distinguished citizen and devoted member of her community WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and this great Empire State; and WHEREAS, Margaret Hanrahan of Carmel, New York, died on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at the age of 91; and WHEREAS, Margaret Shevlin, affectionately known by many as Peggy, was born to Irish immigrants Michael and Katherine (Murphy) Shevlin on March 12, 1932, in New York, New York, and was raised in the Good Shepherd Parish, Inwood section of Manhattan; and WHEREAS, In 1951, Margaret Shevlin married the love of her life, John Hanrahan, and together, they raised seven children; in 1969, the family moved to Carmel, New York, where Margaret resided for the rest of her life; and WHEREAS, Margaret Hanrahan distinguished herself in her profession and by her sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of her community; and WHEREAS, In 1973, Margaret Hanrahan began her long and distinguished career in nursing; for almost 20 years, she worked at Putnam Community Hospital, where she met and remained lifelong friends with many of her co-workers; and WHEREAS, Margaret Hanrahan's commitment to excellence, and her spirit of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charitable and civic endeavors; and WHEREAS, In addition to her full-time jobs as a mother and a nurse, Margaret Hanrahan still found time to volunteer with several local organizations, and was an active and faithful congregant of St. James the Apostle Church for over 54 years; and WHEREAS, Margaret Hanrahan will always be remembered for her faith, love of her cherished family and friends, enthusiasm, and positive passion for life; her smile truly lit up any room she entered, and her laughter was contagious; and WHEREAS, Predeceased by her husband, John; one daughter, Ellen Mary; and two sisters, Ellen (Des) O'Connor and Catherine (Tom) O'Rourke, Margaret Hanrahan is survived by five sons, Michael (Elizabeth), Denis, John (Donna), Joseph (Jane), and Neil (Mary); one daughter, Annmarie (Ron); one sister-in-law, Eleanor Hanrahan; 13 grandchildren, Katie, Ashley, Dana, Sean, Ailisha, Meaghan, Katherine, Jack, Mary Beth, Billy, Michael, Bridget, and Margaret; 10 great-grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan, Claire, Maeve, Nora, John, Joseph, John, Denis, and Ella; and many nieces and nephews, as well as her neighbors, the Crowley Family; and WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of compassion, Margaret Hanrahan leaves behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all she served and befriended; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to mourn the death of Margaret Hanrahan, family matriarch, distinguished citizen and devoted member of her community; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the family of Margaret Hanrahan.
