Senate Resolution No. 1591 BY: Senator COMRIE HONORING Sister Johnna Muhammad upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., Queens County, on June 2, 2019 WHEREAS, The unity of our State and Nation is built upon the compassion of individuals such as Sister Johnna Muhammad who uphold the values of community life and who, through their great actions, epitomize the best of humanity; and WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Sister Johnna Muhammad upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., Queens County, to be celebrated at its 32nd Annual Black & White Awards Banquet: "Women's Empowerment, Legacy, Reclamation and Renewal" on Sunday, June 2, 2019, at Antun's, Queens Village, New York; and WHEREAS, Sister Johnna Muhammad serves as the New York City Muslim Girls Training (MGT) and General Civilization Class (GCC) Sister Captain of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan; and WHEREAS, After joining the Nation of Islam as a teenager, Sister Johnna Muhammad quickly rose through the ranks and has since been active in all aspects of the Mosque; she began her journey as a Drill Instructor in Plainfield, New Jersey, from 1978 to 1981; and WHEREAS, The discipline she gained in this capacity made Sister Johnna Muhammad a perfect fit for her role as a NOI Vanguard Captain, teaching and training young women between the ages of 16 and 35; and WHEREAS, Sister Johnna Muhammad became the New York City MGT Captain in 1999, training all women who accept the teachings of The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad; this training includes, child rearing, housekeeping, caring for spouse, cooking, sewing and etiquette; and WHEREAS, In addition to her steadfast and unwavering service to New York City, Sister Johnna Mohammad advocates for women in Islam across the eastern region and the Nation, counseling women on marriage, career choices, education and wellness; and WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individual for the benefit of others which Sister Johnna Muhammad has displayed throughout her life; and WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to Sister Johnna Muhammad, that future generations may know and appreciate her admirable character, her many benevolent deeds, and the respect and esteem in which she is held by her peers; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Sister Johnna Muhammad upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., Queens County, on June 2, 2019; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Sister Johnna Muhammad.
