A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To urge the National Trust for Historic Preservation 1
to place the sternwheel river steamboat Delta 2
Queen on its annual list of America's 11 Most 3
Endangered Historic Places.4

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE SENATE CONCURRING):

WHEREAS, The sternwheel river steamboat Delta Queen, built in 5
1926, has been transporting passengers on the Western Rivers 6
system since 1947. It is one of only two sternwheel river 7
passenger boats operating under steam and is the sole remaining 8
Western Rivers system overnight passenger boat; and9

WHEREAS, The Delta Queen serves as a reminder of a time when 10
steamboats transported people and supplies on the rivers of the 11
United States. Life on the steamboat today is much as it was in 12
the 1920s, a relaxing 8-to-10-mile-an-hour pace with no modern 13
electronic distractions such as television and the Internet; and14

WHEREAS, The Delta Queen carries 176 overnight passengers and 15
is currently docked south of New Orleans. It was exempt from the 16
1966 Safety at Sea Act, which prohibits wooden boats from 17
carrying more than 50 overnight passengers, but this exemption 18
expired October 31, 2008. However, the steamboat can possibly be 19
saved if the National Trust for Historic Preservation places the 20
steamboat on its annual list of America's 11 Most Endangered 21
Historic Places; now therefore be it22

RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 128th General Assembly 23
of the State of Ohio, urge the National Trust for Historic 24
Preservation to place the sternwheel river steamboat Delta Queen 25
on its annual list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places 26
so that it can possibly continue to carry overnight passengers on 27
the Western Rivers system; and be it further28

RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives send 29
duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the National Trust 30
for Historic Preservation, to the members of the Ohio 31
Congressional delegation, and to the news media of Ohio.32
